I am working really hard to learn the native language, Twi (pronounced chwee). There are 5 main languages, but the 2 most prominent are Ga and Twi. I have met many people here--you know me, always making friends--and I ask them so many questions about their language and culture.
Last night my friends and I talked with some people from
Ghana that a friend of ours at JMU knows. Their names were Emanuel,
Barspar, Prince, and Kofi. They were extremely nice and ended up helping
us at the market when we went today--but that is a story for a
different post.
Anywho, I am not sure if I spelled "me dende" correctly, but it translates to "You can call me Lexie-Akoxa." Akoxa is my Ghana name because I was born on Sunday, March 6, 1994. They name people based on the day they were born. For instance, Lauren was born on a Thursday, so her name in Ghana would be "Ya" (pronounced yah). My name is pronounced "Ah-co-see-yah."
Here are some other words that I have learned to say:
Etesayn?.........................How are you?
eye usua.......................I'm good, you?
manchi............................Good morning
uyoo mandanfu.................you are my friend
medasi..........................thank you
**these are most likely incorrectly spelled...but hey! At least I tried!
Yay for learning Twi! I am certain I will get on Dr. O-A's nerves because I keep trying to learn the language.
