Good Ole Kumasi

We traveled to Kumasi this weekend. It is a large city in the central region of Ghana. I like it better than Accra because it is prettier, cleaner, and just nicer. We haven't done too much her except go to different craft stores. First we went to this weaving center and it was incredible. The guy let me try and weave part of his fabric! It wasn't all that hard either. The woven cloth is unique to Ghana. I forgot what it is called...but Ghana is the only country that doesn't print on the cloth, they just weave the prints into it. Some of these prints were absolutely incredible too! The one I weaved didn't have a print, it was just red.

Then we went to this place where they put prints onto the woven cloth, and each symbol that they put on the cloth has a significant meaning. They make the ink out of tree bark too, which was really interesting to watch. He walked us through the entire process.

Finally we went to a carving market. Their is nothing like being swarmed by a bunch of people trying to sell you things; pulling you in every direction and saying things like, "Sister, come, I give you good price," or "You student? I give student discount come," or the famous, "You like? I give good price." If you look at something in the shop for too long (meaning over 5 seconds) they will come up, grab it, wipe dust off it, and say, "I give good price, how much do you want to pay?" Then, whatever amount you say they duke it, at least. Then you go through this whole bargaining thing until you agree on a prince, or agree to disagree and not buy it. Sometimes you will buy something for 20 cidis, and someone else will buy it for 10 cidis. Whoever is a better bargainer wins. And you bargain for everything, souvenirs, clothes, taxi rids, ect. It will be hard to go back to the US and not bargain.
